Ubuntu is a Zulu word meaning humanity. It is often translated into “I am because you are, and you are because I am”. Coloring Mental Health Collective’s regional public gatherings are Ubuntu in action. They demonstrate that when the needs of the community transcend the needs of the individual, both needs are met. The event includes public rituals and the arts and voices of community leaders working to advocate for the mental wellness of Black and Brown people. Lastly, the gathering closes with a call to action to further our mission and vision within our communities.
The 2022 theme for the LA public gathering is “Access Denied: Overcoming Barriers to Mental Health in Times of Crisis”. This gathering will focus on ways in which Black and Brown communities, especially the Black & Brown LGBTQ population, have been denied access to mental health and COVID resources. It will address anxieties and grief around the pandemic and access to care, and lack of access to culturally competent clinicians, mental health and other support services. For far too long, access has been denied to vital resources for Black and Brown people. A panel of LA area community leaders will discuss strategies to care for the mental and holistic well-being of Black and Brown people. We aim to use the tools gained at the public gathering to change the narrative from access denied to access granted.
